I’ve always been a keen cook and at a young age I was involved with bread making, chutney, jams, pickles, marinades, puddings, cakes and pies and to this day, these are some of the things I truly love making in the kitchen.
It was a bit of a surprise to me when I visited my Big Gran (she’s tall) during my short return to the UK and I was given my family’s recipe binder full of clippings, amended recipes and handwritten notes from Granny, Grandad, great Aunts, great grandmothers and even great, great grandmothers. It was lovely to see recipe notes from great grandma who I have very distant memories of as well as great aunts who I remember as a child.
Browsing through the binder revealed some fond memories of Halloween Ghost Toast, pumpkin chutney and boozy family Christmas cake to name a few and there is plenty of space for me to add in my favorite recipes for generations to come.
The binder couldn’t have come at a better time now we are starting to reap what we sowed in the garden and are looking for exciting ways to preserve the bounty. Pickles and chutneys are probably one of my favorite ways since it gives me an excuse to try new cheeses with the preserves!
